I'm the office administrator in charge of all tech procurement for a 300-employee company. Since 2020 I've managed about $80,000 annually across 12 vendors – and in 2023 we started integrating IoT modules into our hardware products. Here's what I've learned about Quectel, from the L80 GNSS receiver to the G310 5G module. The answers are based on my order history, vendor conversations, and a few painful mistakes.
1. Is Quectel really the best choice for both GNSS and 5G modules?
Short answer: it depends on your specific integration needs. I went back and forth between Quectel and another European module maker for three weeks. The European vendor had better local support, but Quectel's L80 GNSS module was literally half the cost – $8 versus $16 per unit – and the performance specs were nearly identical. Quectel's MOQs vary by module. For standard modules like the EC25 or L80, you can buy from distributors (DigiKey, Mouser) with no MOQ – but you pay a 15-20% markup. For custom SKUs (e.g., with specific firmware), the MOQ is typically 500-1000 units. Lead time in Q1 2025 was 8-12 weeks for 5G modules, 4-6 weeks for 4G/GNSS. I keep a buffer of 200 units of our base module (L80) to avoid production stops. One time we ran out and had to air-freight 50 units – cost $480 extra.
6. What happens if a module becomes obsolete mid-project?
This is the nightmare scenario. Quectel typically gives 12-18 months' notice before EOL. For example, the BG96 4G module was phased out in 2024 and replaced by the BG95-M2. If you're in a multi-year product cycle, you need a migration plan. I now include a clause in our supplier contract requiring 24-month last-time-buy notice. And I always keep an alternative module (e.g., Simcom or Telit) as a backup design path – even if it costs a bit more upfront.
