Quectel isn't right for every IoT project — here's where it excels

If you're designing a connected product that needs global certification in 2025, Quectel is probably your safest bet — but don't expect a one-size-fits-all solution.

In Q1 2024, I reviewed a design where a company used the Quectel EC25 for their mid-tier product and the RM520N-GL for the premium version, with almost identical PCB footprints. That kind of consistency saves engineering time. Period.

  • You're integrating with a specific cellular carrier's custom features (Quectel modules are generic; carrier-specific modules may offer better optimization)
  • Your volumes are below 500 units — the setup and support cost per module may not justify the technical breadth

This isn't about quality. It's about fit. Every module I've tested from Quectel met its datasheet specs. The question is whether those specs match your exact use case.

The practical checklist I use before specifying a Quectel module

I'll be honest: after a few projects where I wished I'd asked more upfront questions, I built a simple checklist. Here's what I run through now:

1. Is the module certified in all target regions, or just a subset?

Check the actual certification list, not just the marketing. As of early 2025, not every module variant carries the same certs. The RM500Q-GL variants differ from the RM500Q-AE in certification coverage.

2. What's your expected annual volume?

At 5,000+ units per year, Quectel's pricing and support become competitive. Below that, you may find smaller vendors are more responsive because your order represents a larger share of their business.

3. Do you have in-house RF engineering capacity?

Quectel modules are well-documented, but they're not plug-and-play. Antenna matching, PCB layout, and thermal management still require RF expertise. I've seen teams blame the module for performance issues that were actually PCB design problems.

4. What's the backup plan if the module gets discontinued?

In 2023, Quectel announced end-of-life for some older LTE modules. The transition to newer variants wasn't seamless. Always design with a second-source option in mind, even if you never use it.

Every analysis I've done points to Quectel being a solid choice for the middle of the market. The numbers said go with them for global coverage and volume pricing. My gut said build in some margin for support variability. I've learned to trust both.

Bottom line: Quectel's modules are reliable and their range is unmatched. The question isn't whether they're good enough — it's whether you're prepared for the integration work they require.
