1. Why does a blood pressure cuff need a Quectel module?

A connected blood pressure cuff has to send data somewhere. Many do it through Bluetooth and your phone. A cellular cuff has a small modem inside, and Quectel is one of the names you'll see on the spec sheet. The Quectel EM05-G 4G CAT4 is a common LTE module for devices that don't need much bandwidth. A reading is a few KB, so it's more than enough. The Quectel EM160R-GL 4G CAT16 is a faster module for higher-throughput tasks. For a cuff, that's usually overkill. For a blood pressure monitor, you don't need CAT16. I'd argue the only reason to choose a CAT16 module is if the device is streaming a waveform, doing frequent firmware updates, or being built to last in a data-heavy application. A blood pressure cuff is none of those. The 'GL' in EM160R-GL may suggest global support, but global doesn't mean every carrier. I still ask for a carrier list or coverage map before I trust it.

Turned out one vendor's 'export' was a screenshot-only PDF. Third, battery life. If a cuff dies after 20 readings, nobody will use it. Fourth, support. 5. Can a connected blood pressure cuff work without a phone?

If I were building a patient monitoring tablet that streams video, I'd choose something like the EM160R-GL. For a daily blood pressure reading, the EM05-G 4G CAT4 is sufficient. Actually, I'd start with the EM05-G and only move up if testing proved otherwise. In my opinion, 'sufficient' isn't a bad word in procurement. It means you're spending money on what matters, not on unused speed. Also, faster modules can require different carrier approvals. If the vendor hasn't completed them, the device may not work on every network. That's a support risk.

7. What about data privacy?

This is where I get picky. Per FTC guidelines (ftc.gov/business-guidance/advertising-marketing), marketing claims have to be truthful and substantiated. But that doesn't tell you how a vendor stores health data. You have to ask about encryption, retention, and whether the vendor can export or delete data on request. If they can't answer, walk away. In our last purchasing cycle, that alone eliminated two models. A blood pressure reading is health information, even if it seems small. Also, check who owns the data. The cuff may be yours, but the health data may live on the vendor's platform. That's a negotiable contract term, not a fixed fee. And if a vendor says 'HIPAA compliant,' ask for a signed business associate agreement. It shouldn't be a secret.

If the vendor can't tell you how readings are encrypted, walk away.

8. Should I buy one for every employee?

Probably not right away. We bought five Duraforce Pro 3 units first, tested them with our most remote-tolerant employees, and watched for support tickets.
