A few mistakes to avoid
Let me start with a confession: for the first two years of buying cellular modules, I treated them like office supplies. Pick a part, get a quote, cut a PO. That's how you get burned.
I'm the admin buyer for a 400-person hardware company. I manage the purchasing for our IoT module orders—roughly $500,000 a year across 20 vendors, give or take. I report to both operations and finance, which means I hear about it when something breaks. After 5 years in this role, I've made enough mistakes to put together a short checklist. This one is for non-engineers who have to buy modules, not make them. It's not a technical deep-dive.
Use this checklist when someone on your team mentions a Quectel RM520N-GL or a Quectel BG95 and you're the one who has to figure out if the quote makes sense. It will save you a couple of expensive surprises.

Sales reps will say the module supports everything. They're not lying, but they're also not the person holding the integration review. When our engineer asked for the Quectel RM520N-GL LTE category, I didn't even know what category meant in this context. It's a measurement of the LTE speed tier, and it matters for fallback when 5G isn't available. The RM520N-GL is a 5G module, but the LTE category in the datasheet tells you whether it will fall back to LTE gracefully on your carrier's network.
I asked our rep, Todd Pepsi, to send the official RM520N-GL datasheet. He did in 30 seconds. But I still had to read it myself. The key number was buried in a table.
Same with the Quectel BG95. The LTE-M/NB-IoT module datasheet is easy to find, but you need to check the band list against your specific network. I messed this up with the old 8110 module we used in a previous design. The band list looked fine until the device was deployed and it wouldn't connect in one region. That cost us a field firmware update and some very angry customers.
Checkpoint: Write down the full part number. Open the datasheet. Circle the bands and the category. Yes, literally.

Modules like the RM520N-GL list certifications on the front page, but your product still needs to work on the carrier's network. In 2020 I ordered a module because the website said 'globally certified.' It arrived with a chipset variant that wasn't approved on one operator in South America. Or maybe it was the power variant. I don't remember exactly. What I remember is the engineering manager saying, 'You didn't check the FCC ID listing?'
Now I ask for three things: the compliance certificate, the carrier acceptance list, and the hardware revision. The hardware revision is the one people ignore. Sometimes the datasheet covers rev A, but the stock you're buying is rev B. They can be different.
Step 3: Calculate total cost of ownership, not unit price
Here's a quick exercise. You get a quote for $35 per module for the BG95, but the dev kit costs $400 extra, the adapter board costs $60, and engineering support is only included if you buy in volume. You're not thinking $35. You're thinking $500 to get started. TCO.
I keep a simple math in my head: unit price, shipping, taxes, tooling, dev kits, sample units, minimum order quantity, urgent-order fees, and internal engineering time to get it working. When I compare quotes, I use that bigger number.
A vendor once quoted me $1,200 for a small batch of RM520N-GL modules. Another quoted $980 with a long lead time and no sample unit. The first wasn't more expensive—or rather, not by the time you counted support and speed. I took the more expensive quote. It looked wrong on a spreadsheet. It was right in real life.
Don't forget the cost of being wrong: return shipping, restocking fees, and the engineer's time. Low unit price is the hook. TCO is the real price.
Step 4: Get samples and lead times in writing
Every vendor says lead time is about 8-10 weeks until you order and it becomes 14. Or 16. Or next quarter. A missed deadline in production planning is worse than a slightly higher price. So I get lead time in the quote, in the PO, and in the confirmation emails.
For our legacy 8110 module, the lead time was 12 weeks when we had an 8-week runway. We survived, but barely. Now I also ask for at least two samples. Why? Because one sample module might be a cherry-picked unit. Two gives you a better sense of production variance. If a vendor can't provide two, that's a red flag. No-brainer.
Step 5: Check the support docs before you commit
What happens after you order? Is there a hardware design guide? An integration manual? A reference schematic? Do they have a support portal that actually responds? The RM520N-GL documentation set was solid, but when we had a 'can you check this regulator layout?' question, I still had to find the right person in the right time zone. That's internal TCO.
I tend to trust vendors who give you design documentation without an NDA avalanche. Quectel is pretty open with their guides, which is one reason we use more of their modules. But I still make it a checkbox: sample of documentation viewed before purchase.
A few mistakes to avoid
First, check the lifecycle status. We once ordered an 8110 module that was already in last-time-buy. We had to switch mid-production. If I had checked the product status, I could have planned the transition. Well, not the entire transition, but I would have seen it coming.
Second, don't assume the datasheet you have matches the firmware version you're getting. We had a mismatch once: the datasheet said one feature was supported, the actual firmware didn't have it. The fix was a firmware update, but it took a week.
Third, keep separate decisions separate. We burned a lot of time debating Cisco vs. some other edge gateway for our network. That's a completely different question from which module to buy, but the same people kept dragging it into the module call. Don't let that happen. Cisco vs. an edge router is a network infrastructure discussion. The RM520N-GL doesn't care what you choose.
Finally, remember the human part. Your account rep matters. Todd Pepsi was good to us, but whether it's Todd or someone else, a responsive rep is part of the deal. The best quote in the world is useless if the person disappears after the PO.
This checklist isn't exhaustive. It's the one I use. The point is to slow down and look at the total cost. The Quectel RM520N-GL datasheet and the BG95 LTE-M/NB-IoT datasheet are good places to start. But the actual cost is in the details—band support, certs, lead time, docs, and the person who answers your call. That's the TCO. That's the game.
After 150 orders and 5 years of doing this, my advice is simple: check the sheet, check the certs, calculate the real cost, get samples, and keep the relationship warm. Do that and the gotchas get a lot smaller.
